School Zone Speed Limits and Traffic Calming Updates

Council has directed staff to revise the existing speed limits in school zones located in local neighbourhoods to time-of-day speed limits. Mississauga currently has 199 school zones on local roads where the speed limit is 30 km/h. Under the new amendments, the speed limit will remain 30 km/h from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday to Friday. Outside of these times, the speed limit will be 40 km/h.

Work has begun on these changes, and will continue through 2025 and be completed by early 2026.

I would also like to inform you that roadways will be among the first in Ward 3 to have their school zone speed limits changed in the coming months:
• Flagship Drive – Between Queen Frederica Drive and a point 60 metres west of Constitution Boulevard
• Havenwood Drive – Between Gulleden Drive and Williamsport Drive (north intersection)
• Williamsport Drive – Between Havenwood Drive (north intersection) and a point 40 metres west of Gulleden Drive
• Fieldgate Drive – Between Burnhamthorpe Road East and Ponytrail Drive
• Ponytrail Drive – Between Fieldgate Drive and a point 30 metres east of Silverplains Drive

Staff were instructed by Council to work with each individual Councillor to determine the desired approach to modifying the existing school zones located on major roadways. The purpose of modifying these school zones is to increase the level of safety, and ensure they are eligible for future Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE). This will require revisions to any existing flashing 40 km/h time of day speed limit currently in operation.

Staff have worked with Councillor Fonseca and the community over the past few years to identify areas of concern and identify road safety improvements. This includes the designation of Community Safety Zones at all school zones within Ward 3, while maintaining and expanding the time of day speed limit reductions. These changes will satisfy the requirements for ASE eligibility.

The revised school zones will be as follows:
1. Bloor Street
a. Signed 40 km/h from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. from Rymal Road to Tasmania Drive
b. Community Safety Zone from Cawthra Road to Runningbrook Drive

2. Tomken Road
a. Signed 40 km/h from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Community Safety Zone from Runningbrook Drive to Rymal Road

3. Tomken Road
a. Signed 40 km/h from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. from Winchester Drive/Canadian Place to Eastgate Parkway
b. Community Safety Zone from Eglinton Avenue East to Eastgate Parkway

4. Rathburn Road East
a. Signed 40 km/h from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. from Cawthra Road to Westminster Place
b. Community Safety Zone from Cawthra Road to Tomken Road

As noted, we will be removing the flashing 40 km/h signs on Tomken Road, replacing them with signs indicating the time of day restriction. Further, we will be repurposing the flashing lights and using them in conjunction with a school zone warning sign, not connected to the speed limit.
