UPDATE- January 13th, 2025
Please be advised that the attached tree permit has been approved to remove nine trees and prune one more at the Region of Peel Hanlan C5 project located at Applewood Hills Park and Burnhamthorpe. The removals are necessary to replace a watermain chamber within the park, and also to accommodate boring pits/machinery east and west of the site on Burnhamthorpe. Compensation amounts are being received from the Region for tree replacements, and these will take place once the project is complete.
Please keep in mind that this situation is a result of the ongoing replacement of the watermain chamber, which is necessary to ensure the long-term integrity and functionality of the water supply system.

Update: January 2025
Site Conditions and Temporary Walkway
In regard to the site conditions and walkway concerns, we have visited the site and have provided a response below, with the support of photos from this late this afternoon and from December 19, when the walkway was initially constructed.
Below is an aerial image of the park with the location and direction of the photos contained below.
The photos at Location 1 to 3 show the equipment and materials referenced in the residents concerns. It is off the existing multi-use trail, and neatly placed in a common area.
Location 1
Location 2
Location 3
The photo at Location 4 supports the comments provided by the resident and we agree that a member of the public has relocated the barrels that were erected as a temporary deterrent at the new walkway and Burnhamthorpe. The photo at Location A was taken when the temporary walkway was built. The barrels and deterrent have been removed. Our vendor will be on site tomorrow (Friday) to re-erect a deterrent at the south end of the temporary walkway.
The photo at Location B and Location 5 shows that the north end of the temporary walkway still has the barrels and deterrent in place. Our vendor will validate its state and may look at installing something a little more sturdy/difficult to purposely relocate.
Location 4: (Taken December 19)
Location 5
Location B (Taken December 19)
The site was visited by our contractor and the barrels were re-erected. Staff will be erecting a more robust deterrent from using the temporary walkway until such time as the walkway becomes the main path.

Update: December 2024
Current/Planned Projects
- Hanlan Feedermain Contract 5
- Contract 5 provides critical interconnections between the existing and newly constructed Hanlan feedermains at two locations, Little Etobicoke Creek at Burnhamthorpe and Eastgate
- Compound within the Burnhamthorpe Park area north of Burnhamthorpe at the Little Etobicoke Creek
- Construction Period – December 2024 to mid 2026 (or earlier)
- Cawthra Sanitary Sewer Interconnection Project
- This work will construct an interconnect between two sanitary trunk sewers located along the Little Etobicoke Creek and Cawthra
- Compound within the Burnhamthorpe Park area, south of Burnhamthorpe at the Little Etobicoke Creek
- Anticipated Construction Period – Currently mid 2025 to 2027
- Mid Block Crosswalk
- Construction of a signalized cross walk to permit a continuous path for the Applewood Trail System
- Anticipated Construction Period – mid to end 2027
Applewood Trail System
Current State
- The Applewood Hills Trail underpass at Burnhamthorpe Road was damaged during the large rainstorm events this past summer and has been closed by City of Mississauga staff.
- On the trail approaching Burnhamthorpe Road from the south, detour signage is currently in place directing trail users to cross Burnhamthorpe Road at Golden Orchard Drive (the nearest signalized crossing).
- On the trail approaching Burnhamthorpe Road from the north, detour signage is currently in place directing trail users to cross Burnhamthorpe Road at Golden Orchard Drive (the nearest signalized crossing).
Temporary State (2025Q1 to mid 2026)
- On the trail approaching Burnhamthorpe Road from the north, trail users in the near future will find the existing trail interrupted due to a temporary construction compound. To permit semi-continuous access (intermittent full trail closures) to Burnhamthorpe, trial users will encounter a temporary walkway that has recently been constructed which will provide for a temporary access to Burnhamthorpe when its safe to do so. The temporary compound area may be in place until mid 2026, and depending on the activities at the compound, the temporary walkway will provide a safe route through the construction. If activities at the compound do not permit safe passage by the temporary walkway, the walkway south of the trial intersection will be closed and the trail users will be detoured towards Golden Orchard or Lovingston.
- Through discussions with Councillor Fonseca’s office and the City of Mississauga, we are entertaining a constant detour be in place during the entire construction project to RECOMMEND all users of the trail system detour to the neighbouring streets, like the detour that will be enacted when the trail system is closed.
- The temporary walkway is not currently for use and have placed barrels and have taped off the ends to restrict access to the temporary walkway. Once our contractor returns in the new year, the temporary walkway will have a barrier installed along the west side (outer barrier of the compound) and we will be placing some material along the east side when we return after the break. The existing trail is still in full service and maintained in typical fashion over the holiday season.
Maintenance of the Temporary Walkway
- City of Mississauga Parks Operations team will be providing a consistent level of service for the temporary walkway, similar to what the trail system currently receives. The temporary walkway has been built as a 1.8m (6ft) wide platform which is wider than many pedestrian sidewalks in Mississauga and can be easily maintained by the City.
Future Trail System Enhancements
- The mid-block signalized crossing at Burnhamthorpe Road for the trail will be installed by the City immediately following the completion of the Region of Peel’s construction projects situated at the north and south sides of Burnhamthorpe Road. Region and City staff are coordinating their efforts through this process. Current schedule is still to be determined but is projected to be in mid to late 2027.
- The interrupted trail will be reinstated, and the landscaping will be returned to similar state through the Burnhamthorpe Park as the various contracts are finished.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
Peel Region will be working in your area on major upgrades to the Hanlan watermains, part of Peel’s most critical infrastructure. The work includes:
- Installing new watermains and new valve chamber construction to connect to existing infrastructure at Burnhamthorpe Road and Eastgate Parkway
- Field investigations and rehabilitation of existing valve chambers, and
- Structural rehabilitation of existing watermains
Watermains are underground pipes that bring tap water from our water treatment facility to your neighbourhood. Valve chambers are underground concrete boxes that provide access to important equipment associated with the watermains. As our population grows, we need to build larger watermains and maintain existing infrastructure to keep providing you with high-quality water services.
Construction Schedule:
The construction will be done in stages beginning in Fall/Winter 2024 and is expected to be completed by early 2027. These timelines are estimates, as weather and other unexpected events may impact our timelines.
Pedestrian Path Closures:
We will need to intermittently close certain sections of the Applewood Hills Trail to complete the work at the Burnhamthorpe and Eastgate locations. Detour signs will be provided and be in place until approximately early 2026.
Other pedestrian and cycle paths may be affected throughout construction. Notices for the closure duration and alternative routes will be provided closer to the time of impact.
The construction areas, path closures and path detours are shown in the maps.
