Extreme Weather and Flooding can happen at any time: take actions to reduce your risk

Limit the damage flooding can cause by following a few simple steps to protect your property and belongings.

Heavy rain can cause pooling, overflowing rivers and flooding. It can also cause traffic disruptions, road closures and sewer problems, resulting in evacuations, power outages, supply shortages, infrastructure damage and debris.

Here’s how you can prepare for flooding and reduce the risk of flooding on your property or within your home.

In addition, as a part of the City’s response to these extreme weather occurrences, we are hosting a City-wide information session on November 13 at the Living Arts Centre.

Event Details:

Event: Public Information Session – Extreme Rainfall and Flooding 2024
Location: Living Arts Centre
Date and Time: Wednesday November 13, 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Free parking will be available at both City Hall and at the Living Arts Centre.

Anyone unable to attend the session may watch a recording of the formal presentations on the City Newsroom after the evening event.

Getting more help recovering from flooding

In addition to the public information session, City Council has also approved several measures to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to help lessen the effects of climate change. Three of those solutions include tools allowing residents to apply for funds to help them recover from these highly impactful events.

The first is a Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant was approved which provides a one-time payment of $1,000 to Mississauga residential property owners who suffered basement flooding damages during the severe weather events on July 16, 2024, or August 17 and 18, 2024. The Flood Relief Grant will be open to the public starting December 1, 2024.

The second is The Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate Program provides homeowners the opportunity to apply for rebates of up to $6,800 for eligible measures, making it easier to protect their properties from future flooding incidents. The Basement Flooding Protection Rebate will be open to the public starting in February 2025.

The third is a Flood Resilience Rebate Program which provides homeowners who experienced basement flood damage the opportunity to apply for rebates of 50 per cent of the invoiced cost up to a maximum of $3,000 to cover costs associated with measure undertaken to prevent or minimize fooding impact through the use of water-resistant materials and other measures to mitigate the damage and loss from potential flooding in the future. The Flood Resilience Rebate Program is expected to be open to the public starting in February 2025.

Information on how to apply to these cost-relief programs will be available soon through the City of Mississauga website and social media channels later this fall and winter.

The Region of Peel also offers a $700 sanitary backwater valve rebate for eligible homeowners. This rebate is part of a subsidy program and helps homeowners cover the cost of installing a sanitary backwater valve to reduce basement flooding due to rainfall. A sump pump subsidy program has also been established to assist homeowners who live on streets serviced by the municipal Foundation Drain Collector (FDC) system. The City offers eligible homeowners a financial subsidy to install a sump pump. In Mississauga, Lisgar is the only community serviced by the FDC system.
