Update: 2021 Airside Maintenance Projects

While aircraft traffic is dramatically reduced, Toronto Pearson continues to play an important role to keep essential travellers and goods moving. As such, we must maintain our airfield for the essential flights that continue to operate and be ready for returning traffic. We have designed a runway and taxiway rehabilitation schedule for 2021 that takes advantage of the significant decrease in aircraft movements while respecting all physical distancing precautions. Runway and taxiway rehabilitation will employ people at a time when thousands in the airport community have been laid off.

Below is an overview of the current 2021 airside maintenance projects. Many details are subject to change, however we thought that it is important to share what is currently planned. As an example: Bombardier will soon commence building its Global Manufacturing Centre at Toronto Pearson, an important project and regional jobs creator. Work is underway on the construction plan and we commit to keeping you updated if construction will significantly impact our operations.

The Work

Planned work on various taxiways on the airfield will restrict the usage of some of our runways.

Closure of Runway 06 Left/24 Right

  • late April to late June
  • mid-August to mid-October

Shortening of Runway 05/23

  • mid-May to mid-June

The Possible Community Impacts

Closure of Runway 06 Left/24 Right will require the increased use of the adjacent east/west runway on the south side of the airport, Runway 06 Right/24 Left.

Runway 06 Right/24 Left, which has been closed during the winter months 2020-21, will reopen and be used for this traffic.

As 06 Right/24 Left is slightly further south than 06 Left/24 Right, final approach and initial departure traffic will also be slightly further south.

Residents living in the ridings listed below may see a change in the distribution of traffic during this work:

  • Affected Ridings to the east of the airport: Etobicoke North, Etobicoke Centre, Humber River Black Creek, York Centre, Willowdale, Don Valley North, Markham-Thornhill, Markham-Unionville
  • Affected Ridings to the west of the airport: Mississauga-Malton, Mississauga East-Cooksville, Mississauga-Streetsville, Mississauga-Erin Mills, Mississauga-Centre, Milton
